About this event

From Ovid to Maya Angelou Stop by Bird Library to check out this display researched and created by Marissa Smith, MLIS ’27. While some may think the topic of book censorship a modern issue, in truth it spans much further back into time than most of us care to imagine. Furthermore, similar themes emerge as objects of offense: sexual content, political dissent and work by marginalized communities discussing their own experiences the chief among them. This year’s Banned Books Week display highlights the history of textual censorship, pulling examples from as early as the year 1 B.C.E. to the present day. Please see the guide for Banned Books Week 2026 for additional resources on book challenges and banning and intellectual freedom. Banned Books Week is organized by Syracuse University Libraries and the College of Arts & Sciences' Department of English, along with sponsors: the Departments of Religion; Women's and Gender Studies; Art and Music History; LGBT Studies; Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics; Political Science; and Writing; The Humanities Center; as well as the Tully Center for Free Speech and Maxwell School's Community Geography Program.
